The new Childcare Centre was officially opened on Saturday 30th March at a ceremony attended by over 100 people. A Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony was offered by Karen Wilson, Liticia Ross and Jemahl Wilson of Yarkuwa Indigenous Knowledge Centre. Member for Farrer, Susan Ley, and Edward River Council Mayor Norm Brennan, as well as Councilors Pat Fogarty and Peta Betts were in attendance and they offered congratulations to the Management Committee for the achievement of this community project valued at $1.6 million. Vice President of the Management Committee Jo Burn made a moving speech in which she thanked the funding bodies, and all of those who contributed to the project, including Resource Architecture, Precise Build and the local tradespeople who contributed to the building. She also paid tribute to the educators and staff for their vision and commitment to getting the project completed, with minimal impact on children and families. Visitors were then invited to tour the building, and sample the delicious seasonal menu. Celebrations concluded with the placing of a time capsule which will be opened in 2030 at the 30 year anniversary of the Deniliquin Children's Centre. This project was made possible by funding from the NSW Department of Premier & Cabinet, the Edward River Council and the Deniliquin Children's Centre.
